Former Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Mpho Moerane, is fighting for his life in hospital following a car accident on Monday.
The African National Congress (ANC) in Greater Johannesburg said Moerane was involved in a “horrible” crash late on Monday night and was admitted to a Johannesburg hospital.
“Cde Mpho Moerane is in a critical but stable condition receiving medical attention in hospital,” Dada Morero, ANC regional secretary, said.
“To this end, the ANC wishes Cde Mpho a speedy recovery and requests that we give the family and the ANC space to provide support to Cde Mpho to ensure his full recovery.”
Moerane became a mayor last year following the death of former mayor Jolidee Matongo.
Matongo tragically died in a car accident on Golden Highway, south of Joburg, following an elections campaign with president Cyril Ramaphosa in Soweto earlier that day.
Moerane held the fort until the ANC lost the metro to the Democratic Alliance-led coalition government after the November 2021 local government elections.
