New medical team impacts hospitals

A new medical team in Johannesburg has been commended by Health MEC Dr Bandile Masuku for saving two lives simultaneously and making history. The Provincial Organ Transplant Project Team consists of specialists who are heads of Surgery and Nephrology from Dr George Mukhari, Steve Biko and Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospitals. The team was recently formulated and made history by performing back to back kidney transplants to two patients at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital.

The two patients are reportedly dependent on a three-day weekly dialysis programme and these organ transplant operations will change their lives. “The joint team will improve Gauteng’s capacity to perform more transplant procedures, share much needed skills and expertise that will allow us to produce more transplant surgeons”, stated MEC Masuku.

The MEC further commended the Provincial Organ Transplant Project Team for changing the two patients’ lives. “You have shown that working collectively as a team and putting resources together will yield positive results which will take Gauteng Department of Health to greater heights”, Concluded Masuku.
