ActionSA has come in support of the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa to ensure expedited prosecution of criminal offences emanating from the recent spate of violence and lawlessness which has gripped KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng over the past few days.
ActionSA leader, Herman Mashaba says South Africans are scared, regardless of where they live, their socio-economic background or their race.
“While tonight’s newest announcement is a move in the right direction, it is both infuriating and disappointing that it required the loss of lives, livelihood, and property for Ramaphosa to come out of hiding and defend the rights of South Africans and the rule of law,” said Mashaba.
Mashaba said our number one priority needs to be returning law and order to the streets of this country.
“We need to act swiftly to arrest, prosecute, and sentence those known to be instigating the violence that has gripped our country,”
He said the President and his Security Cluster must now ensure that the South African Police Services’ (SAPS) crime intelligence and investigative services are up to the task of effectively coordinating both SANDF and SAPS personnel to effectively contain what is obviously coordinated criminality.
“Without this effective coordination, the deployment of the SANDF will be directionless and ineffective,” he said.
Mashaba has called upon all civil society, traditional leaders, religious institutions, political parties, and citizens to work in collaboration to call for calm within our communities.
“We must also hold the Ramaphosa administration to account. Our people must be kept safe. It is his government’s duty to ensure that this takes place by safeguarding the rule of law,” he added.
