Shack fire leaves two dead in Germiston

A shack fire that broke out at Good Hope informal settlement in Germiston, Ekurhuleni has claimed the lives of two people. In the early hours of today a father and child were found dead by teams from the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Service.

According to EMS spokesperson Eric Maloka, its teams had responded to reports of a fire at around 02:36 am. Maloka told Gauteng News upon their arrival, several shacks were found burning. Backup was supplied by a neighbouring fire station and 15 firefighters were deployed to assist in extinguishing the blaze. 

Two bodies were recovered after the flames were contained. It is believed the bodies were those of a father and his young child. 

“The cause of the fire was still undetermined and our fire safetyofficials were summoned to assist with investigations,” said Maloka.

Maloka said that about 10 dwellings perished, but no injuries had been reported. The incident was handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation.
