Kitchen utensils were designed specifically for their designated area – the kitchen. Somehow over the centuries kitchen knives have gradually graduated to what we might have reserved for swords.
For example, a burglar enters your house uninvited, and threatens your life, what do you do? You gladly, without any hesitation, take that beautiful blade you normally chop your steak with and tenderise some of his meat. Don’t worry the cops will understand, what’s he doing in your house anyway?
My father once told me, at young age, that only cowards use a knife in a bout of fisticuffs. With that being said a fist fight was normal to me and growing up in the township compelled one to learn how to defend themselves. As you can imagine my attitude towards people who rely on knives, when there’s a fight, was resentful.
I’m sad to see how the youth of today is quick to grab a blade when trying to intimidate someone or whenever a fight breaks out. We recently heard the tragic story of a Grade 9 pupil, from Thuto Tiro Secondary, who was fatally stabbed in class with a pair of scissors by a fellow learner.
A 24-year-old high school teacher, Gadimang Mokolobate, in the North-West was stabbed to death in 2018 by a learner who threw a fit of rage after being denied a second plate of food. It has become a norm honestly and teachers live in constant fear. What’s happening to our society? Do these kids lack the discipline that our generation was taught at home through corporal punishment? Don’t let the Constitutional Court get wind of this by the way.
Nowadays you can’t spank your child because the ConCourt disagrees but back in the day this practice was meant to discipline a child – AND IT WORKDED. Disciplining and abusing a child are 2 separate things and we ought to understand that distinction. But hey, like I said ‘Don’t tell the ConCourt.’
We went from ‘Scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours’ to ‘Stab my back and I’ll stab yours’. Maybe the Constitutional Court needs to look into this piece and consider an elaborate discussion… Did I just contradict myself right there about keeping this a secret between you and I?
