Woman accused of Mall of Africa heist abandons bail application


Bathobile Mlangeni (29) abandoned her bail applicational at the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Monday, 24 January 2022.

Mlangeni was arrested by the Gauteng Flying Squad on the 6th of January 2022 in Zola, Soweto.

She is accused of absconding with R4m at Mall of Africa where she was employed as a security guard. She was caught by CCTV cameras leaving the cash depot with black plastic bags full of the money.

None of the R4m has been recovered.

Mlangeni is alleged to have stole the cash while she was on duty and disappearing more than 2 years ago. 

She has been on the run until police pounced on her in Zola earlier this month. Despite her name and photograph appearing in newspapers, the former guard managed to evade the police for more than two years.

Dressed in the same clothes she wore on her first court appearance. The accused made a brief court appearance in the Alexandra Magistrates Court, where she abandoned her bail application through her legal aid representative.

Mlangeni is to remain in custody until the 18 February 2022 when her trial is scheduled to resume.
