Four suspects between the ages of 30 and 52 were arrested by police for murder and cable theft after being caught tampering with the environmental infrastructure. The incident reportedly took place on Monday at Corner Harrison and Anderson Streets at 6pm.
“Our officers spotted a white Quantum taxi loading a roll of cable copper at Corner Commissioner and Simmonds Streets while patrolling the area. When they tried to stop the vehicle, at Corner Harrison and Anderson streets, shots were fired from the quantum and three suspects jumped out from the vehicle”, explains Captain Mbele.
The police managed to apprehend the three suspects as they attempted to flee and arrested them but the taxi sped off at that moment. The officers took the taxi’s registration number and followed it to Lehae where they found the driver parked at a BP gas station. The driver (52) was arrested on the spot around 8pm.
A Copper cable was recovered but the firearm has not yet been recovered. The suspects appeared at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 15 January.
