Cable theft grounds Mabopane and Garankuwa Metrorail service

Metrorail train service running in the Northern parts of Pretoria between Mabopane and De Wildt have been temporarily grounded this morning due to cable theft at Winternest.

As a result of this, there is no overhead power supply in both lines resulting in train movement temporarily halted until the technical team replaces stolen cables. All Mabopane and Dewildt trains are not running this morning.

The Metrorail has condemned this act of vandalism in the strongest possible terms. The growing element of cable theft and vandalism of critical infrastructure components which results in dysfunctional signals and track circuits rendering systems temporarily dysfunctional is regrettable.

Metrorail management thanks its commuters and employers for their support and patience whilst technicians and are working hard around the clock to reopen the lines. They also sincerely apologised for the inconvenience caused and advised commuters to seek alternative transportation in order to get their destinations this morning.

Commuters are urged to report any criminal behaviour witnessed within operational areas to protection services officials at the stations and nearby Police stations.
