Human Rights Commission (HRC) Provincial Manager Buang Jones visited Kliptown in Soweto on Monday to attend the residents’ complaints about service delivery and youth unemployment.
Human Rights commission came to the Vaalkamers shacks where unemployment is rife and illegal connections is a norm.
The community shares a chemical toilet and young kids play in the streets were sewage is also a problem in Vaalkamers shacks.
Less than 20 meters away from the shacks is the Walter Sisulu square, where the Freedom Charter was signed and usually populated by tourists. However, community members are not benefiting in the township economy around Kliptown even though it is known as a historic site admired by international tourists.
Lack of sanitation and building houses is a huge problem, as many people in the community are awaiting for their RDP houses.
Jones walked with the residents of Kliptown as she identified work that still needs to be done. People of Kliptown were pleased to see the HRC attending to their complaints.
