MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko Celebrates Recovery of Young Cancer Survivor in Johannesburg

Johannesburg – Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, paid a special visit to the home of 11-year-old cancer survivor Bandile Reagotshepa Galeboe in Bertrams on Thursday, 22 January 2026, to celebrate his recovery and honour the family’s resilience.

Bandile was diagnosed with left proximal humerus osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, in January 2023 at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Under the care of the hospital’s Pediatric Oncology team, he underwent intensive treatment, including multiple cycles of chemotherapy and limb-salvage surgery. He completed his treatment in September 2024 and is currently in remission, following clear scans and biopsies.

The visit followed a personal invitation from Bandile’s parents, Ms Barbara Galeboe and Mr Lennox Smied, who expressed gratitude to the healthcare workers for their clinical expertise, compassion, and emotional support throughout their son’s treatment journey.

“What gave me hope during the hardest moments was the continuous support we received from the healthcare workers. They never gave up on Bandile,” said Ms Galeboe.

Throughout his battle with cancer, Bandile inspired many with his courage and positive spirit, often saying: “Cancer will not kill me, I will kill cancer.” His determination became a source of strength for both his family and medical team.

MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko praised the Pediatric Oncology team, social workers, and allied health professionals for providing holistic care that addressed not only Bandile’s medical needs but also his emotional and psychosocial wellbeing.

She acknowledged the challenges facing the public health system, particularly in oncology services, but said success stories like Bandile’s serve as a powerful reminder of the dedication of healthcare workers across Gauteng.

The Gauteng Department of Health reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cancer care services, improving early diagnosis, and expanding access to quality treatment and support for families across the province.
