VW Polo suspect arrested for unlicensed firearm

The weekend is always filled with crimes and this past one was no different. A 43-year-old male suspect was arrested by police on Saturday for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on corner 9th Avenue and Bird Streets at approximately 1pm.

Captain Xoli Mbele spoke to Gauteng News, “Police received a tip-off from community members about a suspicious white VW Polo parked on 9th Avenue and Bird streets. Our members rushed there and discovered the vehicle with only the driver inside, they then searched himand found a firearm with no serial number and live rounds under the carpet of the vehicle. He failed to produce a license to possess the firearm.”

The gun will be sent to ballistics testing to determine if it was used in the commission of serious and violent crimes. An investigation is currently under way and the suspect appeared on Monday, 18th of November 2019, at the Johannesburg Magistrate Court. 

The Johannesburg District Commander Major General Masha commended community members for being law enforcement’s eyes and ears in the fight against crime. He also urged the community to trust the police and give themmore information concerning crime in their precinct.
